The reason it did not work out for Serge Gnabry at Arsenal, according to his former team-mate

Former Arsenal favourite Lukas Podolski has given his verdict on why Serge Gnabry didn't make the grade at Arsenal, with the winger now shining at Bayern Munich.

Gnabry moved to join Arsenal's youth ranks in 2011 and made his senior debut the following year in the League Cup, going on to make 10 Premier League appearances and scoring once.

However, following a failed loan stint with West Brom in 2015-16 that saw him make just one league appearance, Gnabry left the Premier League in search of regular football and signed with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

His performances back in his homeland attracted the attention of Bayern Munich where, after a spell on loan with Hoffenheim, he has been sensational - scoring 21 goals in 53 league appearances.

Arsenal: The season so far

That has led to many Arsenal fans considering the German international to be the 'one that got away' but he remains a favourite, particularly after scoring four goals in a 7-2 drubbing of Tottenham in the Champions League earlier this season.

Podolski, who played with Gnabry at club and international level, has now spoken about why he feels the winger didn't make it at the Emirates Stadium.

"He was unlucky and had a few injuries. He did well in training. Off the pitch we spent a lot of time together, going for dinner. But sometimes football is like that, or you find a manager who gives you more confidence," he told FourFourTwo.

"Serge can shoot with both feet, and he is powerful and quick – a bit like me, only I don’t have a right foot like him! I’m really pleased that he’s doing well at Bayern."

Gnabry has scored 23 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions for club and country so far this season, including his four goals against Spurs.
