The reason firefighters cordoned off Debenhams in the city centre

Scores of shoppers had to be evacuated after a huge glass window at the front of Debenhams was smashed.

Firefighters were called to the scene at around 6: 15pm pm today (May 3)  and cordoned off an area outside of the department store.

A crew member told a reporter at the scene that they would have to push the glass panel in and smash it to prevent it causing any harm.

Emergency services closed the Horsefair to traffic which is causing delays to buses.

First Buses tweeted: "Horsefair closed due to an incident. All services that use it are diverted via Fairfax St and Broadweir.

"Please wait on bus stops at Broadweir and on lower castle St by Castle Mead building until further notice."

Footage from the scene shows firefighters using a turntable ladder to access the huge glass glass.

Group manager for Avon Fire and Rescue Service Steve Quinton  said two crews from Temple attended the incident.

He said: "We had reports a glass panel had shattered. We used a turntable ladder to deal with the incident. All crews have returned to base now."
