The reason ex-Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen misses out vs Liverpool in Club World Cup clash

Liverpool are in Club World Cup action this evening.

They take on Monterrey of Mexico at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar and it's a reward for Jurgen Klopp's side beating Tottenham Hotspur in last season's Champions League final.

If not for goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi as well as a much better performance, then it would have been the north London outfit taking part in today's game.

There had been hope that an ex-Spurs striker was to be on hand to help avenge that 2-0 loss back in June.

Vincent Janssen was still on the Lilywhites' books at the time despite not making the matchday squad against the Reds which was due to not being registered for Champions League games last season.

The Dutchman brought an end to a miserable spell at Spurs a month after the final as he joined Monterrey in a deal worth a reported £8m.

And he's found his feet in Mexico.

Janssen netted a brace in Monterrey's 2-1 win over Leones Negros in the Copa MX Apertura at the end of last month, and scored his first hat-trick for his new club last Wednesday in their 6-0 win over Cafetaleros de Chiapas.

Overall, the 25-year-old has seven goals in 14 games so far this term.

But he won't be adding to that total against Liverpool.

This is because Janssen has been ruled out of the Club World Cup clash through injury, as revealed by the Liverpool Echo.

As a result, Janssen will cheer his teammates on from the sidelines as they look to spring a surprise on the European champions and book a place in Saturday's final against Flamengo.

Liverpool have been dealt a blow with Virgil van Dijk - an international teammate of Janssen - being ruled out because of illness.

With captain Jordan Henderson partnering Joe Gomez in central defence, that could have been a slight weakness in which the ex-Spurs star could have got some joy with.
