The reason Dani Ceballos and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were left out of Arsenal vs Newcastle

The reasons behind Dani Ceballos and Ainsley Maitland-Niles' absences for Arsenal's game against Newcastle have been revealed.

Both players started the Gunners' 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Thursday and were expect to be involved at the Emirates on Monday.

It was therefore a surprise that neither was included in Mikel Arteta's 20-man squad for the Premier League visit of the Magpies.

And it has now been explained why both midfielders were not involved at the Emirates.

According to reports Ceballos misses out due to a tight calf. It is as of yet unknown how much longer the injury will keep him out for.

The Spanish midfielder was replaced in the line up by Thomas Partey who is making his first start since December after suffering a recurrence of his thigh injury in the North London Derby last month.

There were some concerns about whether the Ghanaian was being rushed back after what happened against Spurs, but speaking before the game Arteta

"Well he's certainly ready to start," said Arteta "He's done enough to start the game.

"He played 25 minutes the last game so let's see how long he lasts. Obviously there is nothing like a football match in this league so let's see how he goes."

Maitland-Niles on the other hand has been left out of the squad purely on the basis of selection.

The England international came in last match in place of Kieran Tierney, after the Scot had suffered from muscle fatigue.

However, Tierney was deemed fit enough to start and speaking ahead of the game Arteta admitted he was relieved to have him available for selection again.

"He's a player who has the natural ability to go forward, to sustain attacks for us to create a lot of situations in the final third," he said,

"We certainly missed him, and we got him back now."
