The reason Chelsea's Ben Chilwell is not in England squad for the game vs Croatia at Euro 2020

Ben Chilwell was a shock omission from Gareth Southgate's squad for the Three Lions' first Euro 2020 clash against Croatia on Sunday.

Chilwell was expected to battle with Manchester United's Luke Shaw for the left-back spot, but neither have made the starting lineup against Croatia, with Kieran Trippier named instead.

And while Shaw is on the bench for Southgate's side, Chilwell is nowhere to be seen, with the full-back and Jadon Sancho noticeable omissions from the 23.

England, like other nations, have a 26-man squad for the entirety of the Euro 2020 tournament, but can only name a matchday squad of 23.

Chilwell, Sancho and the yet to reach full fitness Harry Maguire are the three to miss out.

And manager Southgate explained the decision to name Trippier at left-back, saying that his "communication and leadership will be a help".

Southgate went on to explain Chilwell's omission saying: "It's just unfortunate we can only name 23 and we've had to cover certain positions.

"I don't like the fact we're having to leave players out of the squad in a major tournament it's not fair on them."

There are two more group games and England fans will be hoping more games thereafter for the Chelsea star to make an impact on the tournament.
