The reason Chelsea loanee Danny Drinkwater won't feature for Aston Villa in Carabao Cup final

It has been a night to remember for Aston Villa after they beat Leicester City 2-1 in the Carabao Cup semi-final to book a place at Wembley.

An injury time strike from Trezeguet sealed the win for Dean Smith's men as they defeated Brendan Rodgers' men 3-2 on aggregate, having drawn 1-1 in the first leg at the King Power Stadium.

It means Aston Villa will play in the showpiece final on Sunday, March 1 against either Manchester City or Manchester United, who meet at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow with City leading 3-1 from the first leg.

But one Aston Villa player won't be featuring in the final.

That man is Danny Drinkwater, who joined Villa on loan from Chelsea earlier this month for the rest of the season.

Drinkwater has played three times for Villa since making the move, but did not feature in either leg of the semi-final against Leicester.

That is because the Chelsea midfielder is ineligible for the competition, having already played in the Carabao Cup for Burnley during a loan spell earlier this season.

Drinkwater made one of just two appearances for the Clarets in a Carabao Cup tie against Sunderland in August, which the Black Cats won 3-1 at Turf Moor.

As a result, he is not able to play for another club in the competition, and will not be able to feature at Wembley in March.
