Jadon Sancho is missing from England's squad for the Three Lions' Euro 2020 opener against Croatia.
The frontman, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with both Chelsea and Manchester United tipped to make a big-money move, was expected to play a key role during the tournament.
However, he could find it difficult to make an impact after being left out of the squad entirely for the opener against Croatia at Wembley Stadium.
England, like other nations, have a 26-man squad for the entirety of the Euro 2020 tournament, but can only name a matchday squad of 23.
Sancho, Ben Chilwell and the yet to reach full fitness Harry Maguire are the three to miss out.
Southgate went on to explain the trio's omission saying: "It's just unfortunate we can only name 23 and we've had to cover certain positions.
"I don't like the fact we're having to leave players out of the squad in a major tournament it's not fair on them."
Sancho scored 16 goals in 38 appearances for Borussia Dortmund this season, striking up a good partnership with another summer transfer target of Chelsea's in Erling Haaland.
But he was not at his best during England's last warm-up game for the tournament against Romania and has suffered as a result, missing out on the squad vs Croatia.
