The reason Cardiff City target Neil Harris left Millwall as reports suggest he's leading Bluebirds race

Cardiff City are set to make a swift managerial appointment to replace Neil Warnock, with Neil Harris and Lee Bowyer the two main candidates.

and are hopeful of making an appointment in the next 72 hours.

This comes after Warnock departed Cardiff yesterday after a meeting with the club's owners.

It was agreed the two would part company by mutual consent, despite Warnock's initial plans to retire at the end of the season.

It's been a mixed start for Cardiff this season, who lie seven points adrift of the Championship's top six in 14th place.

Sunday's home defeat to Bristol City proved to be Warnock's last game in charge after just over three years at the club.

Out-of-work manager Harris is understood to be one of the main candidates to succeed Warnock, having left Millwall earlier in the season.

The former Lions striker spent four years in charge at The Den, leading them back into the Championship and consolidating them in the second tier.

However, after years at the club, Harris decided to call it a day as it was "the right time" for both parties.

In a statement released via the League Managers' Association, he said: "It is not a decision made with haste. However, I believe it to be the right decision at the right time, not only for the club, but for me.

"I truly believe that I leave the club in a very healthy position in terms of infrastructure, staffing and playing squad which gives a new manager a platform to continue the club's development.

"During the last four and a half years as manager, there have been some incredible successes for our club, including two Wembley play-off finals, a promotion back to the Championship, two FA Cup quarter-finals and, now, relative stability in the second tier of England's very competitive league structure.

"I look forward to coming back to The Den to see so many good friends in future."

Millwall swiftly appointed Gary Rowett as his successor and the former Stoke City boss has won two of his first three games in charge, lifting the Lions to 15th in the table, level on points with Cardiff.

Should Harris take the reigns at the Cardiff City Stadium, his first game will be a trip to Charlton Athletic after the international break.

According to talkSPORT sources, Harris is Cardiff's number-one choice to replace Warnock at Cardiff City Stadium.
