The reason Bongani Zungu to Rangers transfer fell apart as Ibrox club appear to cool interest

Rangers cooled their interest in South African midfielder Bongani Zungu because they thought he was "out of condition" according to a report in France.

The Ibrox club have been heavily linked with a move for the Amiens player throughout the summer, with a £2.5million transfer suggested.

However it now seems that Steven Gerrard has turned his attention to other targets.

It's claimed there were fears 27-year-old Zungu is overweight and out of condition.

The midfielder hasn't been involved for the Ligue 2 side in pre-season with Amiens manager Luka Elsner saying he'll only play those who are committed to the club.

He said: "We need only players who are 100 per cent committed to the club and the players who are trying to leave won't be involved.

"I want players who give everything in training and pre-season. The league starts in less than two weeks' time and I cannot afford to carry players whose futures are not clear."

Zungu has also been linked with moves to other clubs in France and Germany this summer.

Rangers have already brought in strikers Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten in addition to Ianis Hagi, Leon Balogun, Calvin Bassey and Jon McLaughlin.
