The reason behind Harry Kane's absence from Tottenham squad to face Manchester City explained

Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Harry Kane is still working on his fitness after being left out of Tottenham Hotspur's opening Premier League match against Manchester City.

The match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium comes amid plenty of speculation surrounding Kane's future and City boss Pep Guardiola publicly stating that he wants to sign the England captain if Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy were to negotiate his sale.

The 28-year-old striker returned to full training on Friday following his post-holiday five-day isolation at Hotspur Way, but with just two training sessions ahead of the match the decision has been taken not to include him in the squad to face the team he is being linked with.

Espirito Santo confirmed the reasoning behind Kane's exclusion ahead of kick-off.

"He is continuing his preparation, the delay all these things," he told Sky Sports. "Harry needs to work, he worked today and he will keep on working until he is ready the team.

"Players that not had many sessions working with us, different case with Bryan because he was at the Olympic Games, also Romero, but I think for them it is important to be here to see the stadium, be at the hotel, the meeting, to see all the process we have, it is important."

When asked whether Kane is at the stadium, he added: "He worked in the morning, I don't know what he is going to do."

Jordan Henderson, who had an injury pre-tournament, is the only England player to appear in the Euros final that is yet to return to action for his club.

Tottenham play Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday night in the Europa Conference League and then Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
