The reason Arsenal's Nicolas Pepe has returned early from international duty amid injury fears

Reports that Arsenal have been handed a massive injury scare ahead of their Premier League clash against Watford a week on Sunday are wide of the mark.

The Gunners will go into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby last weekend - a game which saw the hosts recover from a two-goal deficit.

In addition, it was the first time head coach Unai Emery had started the exciting attacking trio of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe at the same time.

And there appeared to be some worrying news on the fitness front for the visitors ahead of the game vs Watford.

Club record signing Nicolas Pepe had emerged as a doubt for the trip to Vicarage Road.

This would have come as a surprise to many as Pepe played the full 90 minutes against the Lilywhites, claiming an assist for Lacazette's goal which halved the deficit before half-time.

The winger was called up by Ivory Coast for their friendlies against Benin and Tunisia, but it's since been revealed that he was injured.

And fans may have fearing the worst upon hearing an update on the summer signing from Lille.

"Nicolas Pepe, injured with his club, came in to declare it late on Wednesday afternoon,” a statement via the Ivory Coast website reads - as per Sport Witness.

But Arsenal fans can rest easy.

Football.london understands that while Pepe has returned to England, he is not nursing an injury of any kind.

Having not had a full pre-season - because of his involvement at this summer's Africa Cup of Nations tournament - it was agreed by Ivorian federation and Arsenal that it is best for him to work on his fitness at London Colney.

Furthermore, Pepe joined up the Ivory Coast squad and spent a short period with the team but both parties agreed best for him to sit out games against Benin and Tunisia.

This will be great news for Emery as well as Arsenal fans as Pepe has shown glimpses of real quality in his four appearances thus far and should be raring to go against the Hornets next weekend.
