The reason an unmarked cargo plane returned to Edinburgh shortly after departure

An unmarked aircraft appeared to circle Edinburgh and return to the capital shortly after departing the city's airport on Monday evening.

A West Atlantic flight left the capital shortly after 11pm on 27 April and briefly headed south towards the Pentlands before returning within half an hour.

Twitter user @GerrMac posted: "What is going on at Edinburgh Airport right now. This unmarked aircraft took off, circled and came back to the airport??"

However after a few quick calls Edinburgh Live realised the reality was a whole lot less mysterious than the thrill-a-minute fiction many of us have been reading to pass the time during lockdown.

Basically, it was a mail plane which experienced a mid-air technical failure and was forced back to Edinburgh.

West Atlantic scheduled the flight to depart the city just after 11.10pm, and it was believed to have been heading south towards East Midlands airport.

Their cargo planes regularly take Royal Mail deliveries, parcels and other cargo south of the border to the Midlands depot.

However West Atlantic confirmed that shortly after departure crew were alerted to an "error indication" and decided to return.

The cargo was moved to an alternative aircraft before heading south, while the fault was investigated as the plane was stationed at the airport.

According to their website, West Atlantic Group has two cargo airlines – one in the UK and the other in Sweden.

They have contracts for DHL, FedEx, dpd, TNT, UPS and Royal Mail among others.

They say they are "one of Europe's most trusted suppliers of dedicated cargo aircraft solutions to the Integrated Express and Mail industries".
