The 'really annoying' Newcastle United moment that made Alan Shearer 'angry' vs Arsenal

Alan Shearer was left 'angry' by Jonjo Shelvey's failure to beat the first man with a corner kick in the build-up to Arsenal's opening goal against Newcastle United on Monday night.

Newcastle were awarded just two corner kicks at the Emirates and an Arsenal defender easily headed Shelvey's delivery clear at the near post both times.

On the second occasion, on 50 minutes, Thomas Partey went on to cut Newcastle open with a smart ball over the top and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired his side in front.

Bukayo Saka would add a second on the hour mark before Aubameyang scored another goal late on to give Arsenal a comfortable 3-0 victory and further increase the pressure on Steve Bruce.

Bruce vowed to do things his way but, having named Callum Wilson, Andy Carroll, Joelinton and Miguel Almiron in his much-changed starting line-up, Newcastle managed just one shot on target on the night.

It said it all about Newcastle's attacking threat that Arsenal's opening goal came from the visitors' own set-piece, which brought back bad memories of the Magpies' 5-2 defeat at Leeds last month.

"Well, this is the really annoying thing that makes me angry because you bring [Jamaal] Lascelles up, you bring [Ciaran] Clark up," Shearer told Premier League Productions.

"You've got [Andy] Carroll in there. You've got Joelinton in there. You've got others who can head a ball in there and you're saying 'come on' to Jonjo Shelvey.

"Give me one bit of quality. Put the ball into the box, into the danger area, and he hits the front post. It also happened in the first half.

"Then, to make matters worse, you're thinking: 'Come on! Where's your effort? Where's your determination to get back?' That sort of summed the game up for Newcastle with Arsenal scoring from their set-piece.

"Arsenal were much better, much brighter. They were more lively in that second half and Newcastle couldn't live with that and couldn't cope with that, and Arsenal deserved to win and probably deserved to score more goals."
