The reality of living next to a secret £150,000 cannabis farm

Residents of a Smethwick street where a secret cannabis farm was operating have revealed that they were unaware of the illegal activity being carried out in their neighbourhood.

Birmingham Live reported that a faint smell of marijuana during hot weather in the summer was the only sign that something was amiss for residents of Cheshire Road in Smethwick.

However, a West Midlands Police raid in October following a tip-off uncovered 153 cannabis plants with an estimated value in excess of £150,000.

The plants were destroyed while growing equipment, which was also seized, was recycled.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the time but released following questioning and faces no further action.

West Midlands Police said there have been no other arrests since then.

Neighbours said there had been no suspicious activity at number 102 - which was slapped with a court order in October banning people from entering the property for three months.

The terraced house with a red exterior now has a notice stuck on the front door warning people not to enter the property.

The notice reads: "From 4pm on October 29, all persons are excluded, as set out below, for a period of three months, being to midnight, January 28, 2022.

"A person who is not listed above commits an offence if they remain on or enter these premises and can be arrested. If found guilty of an offence, they are liable to imprisonment and/or a fine."

News that the property was being used as a cannabis came unexpected to residents living on the street.

A man, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We never heard anything. The gentleman who owned the house passed away earlier in the year.

"After that, I don't know who (lived there)."

Asked what he thought of the raid, he said: "Obviously they have to do something when they have information. We didn't see or hear anything."

A woman, who also wished to remain anonymous, added: "I didn't see or hear anything suspicious but the house smelt of weed during the summer. There was an old gentleman who lived there."
