The reality behind Liverpool fans' Invincibles retorts and why it won't matter to Arsenal

Ismaila Sarr, you little dancer!

Thanks to the 22-year-old's brace which was followed by a Troy Deeney special at Vicarage Road, Arsenal remain the only side in the Premier League to go an entire season unbeaten. As expected, the full time whistled sparked chaos on social media.

From Arsenal "Phew..." tweet which amassed more engagement than official club tweets about Roma's last-gasp win over Barcelona, Leicester winning the Premier League and Liverpool lifting the Champions, to pretty much every fan posting pictures of The Invincibles, it was a sight to behond.

Despite their voices being somewhat muffled by the sheer volume of Premier League fans on social media, Liverpool fans were responding.

Out came the pictures of their Champions League-winning sides and Thierry Henry and Arsene Wenger walking past the iconic trophy in 2006.

Even with though these rebuttals fell on deaf ears at the time, there has been time for the dust to settle and address the issue properly. Would lifting the Champions League have been more meaningful than than going the entire 2003/04 season unbeaten?

Looking at the issue objectively, as much as it pains me to admit it, it probably would have been. In the midst of a jovial back and forth, it's easy to throw the golden Premier League trophy as a trump card. In fact, I encourage it. Unfortunately, simply responding like that glosses over the underlying issues.

No matter who won the final in Paris in 2006, Arsenal's trajectory as a club was going to change which is why it stings that much more when rival fans bring it up.

With a stadium move that summer, new rivals in Chelsea gaining momentum and the core of The Invincibles crumbling rapidly, that final came at the perfect time. A time of real transition. Rather than focus on the ifs, buts and maybes of those 90 minutes, what has happened in the 14 years since has proven just how important lifting that trophy would have been.

Just two years later, eight of the 11 that started in Paris had left the club. As Arsenal's aging legends departed, however, with the stadium costs and results on the pitch fluctuating, fitting replacements couldn't be found.

Gems like Samir Nasri, Laurent Koscielny and Andrey Arshavin were signed, squad players like Robin van Persie and Gael Clichy rose to the challenge and with Jack Wilshere coming through, the squad looked promising. But without that elite core of players to drive Arsenal through a whole season, they just couldn't compete.

Year after year players clocked onto this and decided leaving north London would be best for them. Although each player leaving hurt, could you blame them? Very few had a real connection to Arsenal and with the club's chances of lifting silverware dwindling moving would have been the clear choice for almost anyone.

This of course continued throughout the 2010s and is still very much a threat to Arsenal today. Missing out on European qualification as a whole this season may see players look elsewhere but will also have a worrying impact on the club's finances as explored by James Benge .

Had Arsenal got over the line in Paris, there's no doubting Arsenal would have become a much bigger force than they currently are. Even if players made way in a similar fashion, adding a Champions League medal to the pull Wenger had would have made the Gunners an almost irresistible proposition.

Although the objectivity around this discussion is what makes it so heart-wrenching to revisit, ultimately this is what will settle the debate.

Yes, Liverpool have won the Champions League and will most likely win the Premier League this season. But like Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers, they just won't be able to say they did it without losing a game.

So in the grand scheme of things, lifting that Champions League may have meant more over time but hey, Liverpool's Premier League trophy isn't going to be gold is it?
