The real Valerie from Amy Winehouse’s classic cover has finally been unmasked

Amy Winehouse's cover of Valerie is one of the tragic star's biggest hits, but no one knew who the song was about - until now.

The real Valerie has been unmasked as a celebrity makeup artist called Valerie Star, who claims she knows what the quirky lyrics mean.

The tune was originally released by The Zutons, whose frontman Dave McCabe dated Star.

American Valerie met the singer in a bar in Florida and was meant to move to the UK to be with him, but got arrested a week before she was due to leave.

This explains this lyric: “Did you have to go to jail/Did your house go up for sale?.”

She decided she would stay in the US and it was then that Dave revealed he'd written a song about her.

Valerie's favourite line is: "I've missed your ginger hair and the way you like to dress."

She told VICE : "I used to dress really ridiculous back then too, per that line.

"It really was about that part of my life. I was dressing ridiculously fabulous, following around this boy in a band, and getting arrested really well."

The song was popularised by Amy and produced by Mark Ronson, who Valerie would go on to meet.

She explained: "I remember meeting Mark [Ronson] when he was doing a radio interview alongside Dave. Mark said [to me], "I feel like I should open up my wallet and just hand you money.

"It was really funny. It’s also kind of surreal."
