The Reader: Young people are making sacrifices too

Acknowledge those in their twenties in this terrible time.

It is 12.30pm and Boris has just announced the 10pm curfew on pubs and restaurants; I glance over at my 24-year-old daughter’s crestfallen face. She’s heard more bad news, and of course it is nobody’s fault, but do please realise that this is a hugely tough time for young people.

Key workers, school children and the elderly have all been recognised and there is, quite rightly, sympathy and gratitude. However, there appears to be small mention of the twenty-somethings.

Relationships are stretched, or non-starters if you are single, and social lives are limited. With a shortage of jobs and anti-social home-working, it’s a recipe for disaster. There is also little credit given for the help they offer neighbours and charities.

This group deserves better. Acknowledge it is hard for them, make them feel they count too.

Dear Margaret

I agree. The pressures heaped upon those in their twenties can’t be overstressed but are routinely overlooked. Millennials have been castigated throughout the summer for spreading the virus by congregating en masse but it’s not partying that’s to blame, it’s an economy that tips them into low-paid service jobs. Now most will be faced by debt, rent and the annihilation of income sources. I worry for my afflicted generation. All we can do is keep talking.

Don’t let cancer be forgotten again

As virus restrictions tighten again, I am calling on the authorities to make sure people living with cancer are not forgotten once more. More than 450 people with cancer die every day so it is imperative we keep our responses in proportion and provide them with the best possible care.
Dame Laura Lee, Maggie’s chief executive
