The Reader: Measures for cyclists that all would welcome

The debate rolls on about major cycle lanes. They are an important part of the green infrastructure, but only a part. There are three additional actions which would transform cycling in London.

First, use modern, cheap technology to enforce speed limits on every street. Motorists would swiftly realise that the common habit of speeding between yellow cameras is not sensible.

Second, remove all speed humps which would no longer serve any useful purpose. They are a hazard for cyclists and the practice of drivers accelerating and braking between them, producing increased pollution, would cease.

Third, establish a programme to ensure an adequate surface on London streets. Incompetent patching after excavations and endless potholes are a serious danger to cyclists. Unlike the regular disputes with motorists and local businesses when major cycle lanes are proposed, these actions would be welcomed by all.

Dear John

You are right to highlight road danger, of which speed is a key part: this is the main reason more people do not cycle. Your suggestions bring to my mind an all-encompassing solution. To prevent speeding, enforcement powers need to be transferred from the police to the boroughs. Then, in return for keeping to the limit, motorists could enjoy hump-free, resurfaced roads — funded by punitive fines on those who ignore the new rules.

Let Nazanin return to the UK

News that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffehas been released from house arrest is welcome. That she faces another court hearing is not. Iran’s Supreme Leader should make the supreme gesture and allow this unfortunate woman to return to Britain and be reunited with her husband and daughter and put this sorry saga to an end.
