If you, like me, grew up in the age of comedies, you probably miss them as I do. Luckily, we are seemingly getting a new kind of comedy thanks to Glen Powell, Paramount, and Powell’s production company, Barnstorm. It’s just a title we can’t really put in headlines.
Written by Caroline Glenn and Sean Doherty and being produced by Powell and Dan Cohen for Barnstorm, the film is reportedly going back to the days of movies that your elders probably loved. I say elders and I am including myself in this description because by the youths standards, anyone born in the 90s should be in a grave. Oh right, and the name you can’t really write in an online publication.
The F**kboat is being described a “high concept” project “in the vein of Risky Business and Easy A,” per Variety. The publication cited that the script was acquired by Barnstorm after many others attempted to buy it first before Powell and Cohen finalized the script and shopped it around. Other details about The F**kboat are remaining under wraps but as someone who longs for the days of a new big comedy in theaters, I am incredibly sat.
Part of what I love about Glen Powell’s work is that he is trying to keep the idea of movies as they were in the 80s and 90s alive. He has starred in big budget action films, a rom-com, and now he’s trying to bring back the teen comedies. Good! We have become so narrowly focused with our cinema, we only have franchise films or more serious art pieces. I miss going and seeing a silly comedy in theaters! Counter programming is important.
And the teens deserve a weird comedy like we used to have. I think the last one I can really think of and say that it fit with that genre was the A24 film Y2K that came out last year and that is rarely talked about. We used to have Easy A and She’s the Man and so many other movies like it so The F**kboat has me excited to see what Barnstorm and Paramount are planning with Glen and Doherty’s script.
