The Rangers 'Sports Direct' warning that will sound familiar to Newcastle United fans

From the brink of extinction completing an invincible season and denying rivals Celtic a tenth straight title, ithas been an eventful decade for Rangers.

It is also an era which has been punctuated by a fractious battle with Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley.

Relegations, disputes and frequent accusations of prioritising profit over success have defined the Magpies owner's time on Tyneside so far.

Ashley's brief stint in Glasgow was met with a similar level of resentment from the club's fanbase, with the businessman opting to sell his stake in the club in 2017 following a lengthy battle for control at Ibrox.

The return to the pinnacle of Scottish football was confirmed in March when Steven Gerrard's side ended Celtic's nine-year domination of the Scottish Premiership.

A final-day thrashing of Aberdeen was enough for Rangers to complete an unbeaten season and finish 25 points clear of their rivals.

Confirmation of the club's 55th title came six years on from a board meeting where Dave King and his colleagues managed to oust Ashley's regime.

It was in March 2015 that Rangers shareholders struck a decisive blow against Ashley, with shareholders overwhelmingly voting to remove former Magpies' managing director Derek Llambias and Barry Leach.

Speaking on the club's fight to free themselves from the Newcastle owner and compete at the highest level once again, King stressed a fear that has been echoed by Magpies fans on many occasions in recent seasons.

He told the Athletic : "The club was dropping to a level where we wouldn't have challenged for honours as Ashley seemed quite content to run the club with Llambias and Leach on the basis that he made money.

"I felt he was making it another Sports Direct."
