The Rangers legend who would most improve Steven Gerrard's side

Rangers are flying at home and abroad under Steven Gerrard and look every inch a side capable of throwing a spanner in the works of the Celtic trophy juggernaught.

Like any side though, that's not to say they couldn't do with a bit of star-dust.

Taking our cue from a debate that saw Newcastle fans discuss on social media which star form the past would best fit into their current side, Record Sport pondered which player from the last thirty years would add the most to Gerrard 's first XI.

Alfredo Morelos is taking all the plaudits for his striking prowess but imagine him with Brian Laudrup feeding him?

You get the picture, it's not about the best overall player, rather who would be the best fit for the current team.

Have your say in the poll at the bottom of the piece.

Richard Gough

A genuine, top-class defender who could operate comfortably at the highest level, Gough was also a leader of men from the back.

Peerless in the air and almost as good on the deck, Gough had the mobility of a full-back and the height and power of a central defender.

An organiser and communicator in the top bracket he also demanded standards from those around him.

He'd fit in perfectly to the current Rangers defence, an obvious upgrade on what's there and immediately inject a level of defensive leadership that would lift the entire team.

Arthur Numan

(SNS Group)

Borna Barisic has been in good form of late but imagine Numan rampaging down the left, complimenting the quality of James Tavernier on the right.

Numan was one of the best left-backs in the world when he signed at Ibrox for £5m from PSV, and he lived up to the hype.

Quick, dogged in his defending and superb in one-on-one situations he would give the defense both solidity and attacking flair.

He would be an obvious an immediate and upgrade and would provide the team with a crucial balance in wide areas.

Paul Gascoigne

Paul Gascoigne starred at Ayr as a youngster (SNS Group)

A world class creative midfielder, Gazza could change a game on his own.

His ability to carry the ball in midfield, dribbling past despairing defenders was one of the most exciting sights in 1990's football.

A master of set-pieces, Gascoigne would provide a level of quality that would add significantly in dead ball situations.

The only negative is that Gerrard would have to change his shape to accommodate the Geordie where others would fit seamlessly.

A chance worth taking to include such a monumental talent?

Barry Ferguson

(SNS Group 0141 221 3602)

A complete midfielder who could do pretty much anything - from box-to-box dynamism to metronomic control from deep.

A team player who always made himself available, sometimes to his own detriment, Ferguson's quality and work ethic would make him a perfect fit for any role in the current midfield.

With a comfort on the ball rarely seen in a Scottish player, the ability to create and destroy, the midfielder would add steel, quality and leadership to the team.

His style seems the perfect fit for what's being built at Ibrox under their Scouse boss.

Brian Laudrup

Many will feel he's the best all-round player on this list but how would he fit into Gerrards team?

Walter Smith utilised him across the front-line and it's hard not to imagine that the Dane would be a perfect fit for one of Gerrard's inverted winger roles.

A player with creative quality of who could carry the ball at pace, Laudrup would be a perfect fit in the current team.

If Ryan Kent looks the part in this set-up, Laudrup would surely run riot.
