The Rangers horror show directed by a man possessed that was foreshadowed hours before kick-off

"There's only one Steven Gerrard "

That cry from the Hibs supporters filled the Mount Florida sky, as they riffed on the pain of Rangers during the closing stages of their triumphant 3-1 Premier Sports Cup semi final win over their rivals.

But the man who led Rangers to a Premiership title romp last season may well have been as befuddled as interim replacement David McCallum was.

That's how good Hibs were.

If the first half goal blitz was impressive, the grit displayed during a relatively nerve-free final 45 minutes will have delighted Jack Ross.

The Hibs boss was a man possessed from the moment he stepped off the bus - a steely glare from a manager who had waited a month to lead his team out in the wake of their Covid call-offs.

Seriously, Ross was prowling the touchline from the first whistle and aimed a massive fist pump towards the main stand after Martin Boyle's opener. He sensed the importance of striking first.

His focus was replicated by every one of his players who delivered a masterclass in efficiency, as their talisman bagged a hat-trick and their defenders, outwith Ryan Porteous' one error, repelled Rangers at every turn.

McCallum was thrust into the spotlight and there was less certainty in their sprawling technical area as he was left with a rueful look amid a nightmare display.

And Derek McInnes, an admirer of the Rangers B coach, foreshadowed the events at Hampden with new boss Gio van Bronckhorst watching from the stands.

Writing in his Mail on Sunday column, he wrote: "The test is if things aren't going well and there's a need to change things during the game.

"People can get sent off, you can fall behind and it's all about how you react to that. That's where experience in the dugout could be a factor.

"And if things aren't going well, Giovanni will find it difficult not having an influence."

That certainly proved true as McCallum turned to Brian Gilmour for counsel on how to change a game that appeared to be slipping away before the interval.

The interim boss caught many fans and pundits out when he removed Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo during the second half as Rangers desperately searched for a way back into the match.

And the call to sub two of the stars of last season caught McInnes' attention while working as a pundit for title sponsors Premier Sports.

He said: "Did I agree with his subs? I’d have kept Aribo and Kent on against a tight defence – you always think Kent’s going to create something even when he’s not playing well.

“That was strange to me but he’s in that position. That is on the players."

However, any criticism of the man leading Rangers feels hollow when the players themselves produced a performance lacking energy, guile and creativity.

The 'one in nine' trophy critique of Steven Gerrard was never going away until more silverware was secured but it's now very much a Rangers issue with their former boss now in place at Aston Villa.

But Ibrox woes woes at Hampden, and there were many, undersell a Hibs side who appeared sick and tired of the criticisms of their character.

Yes, Ross knows a trophy is the ultimate yardstick of success but the narrative has flipped for a team who are becoming Hampden regulars and appear to be on the verge of a breakthrough triumph.

There were many factors behind Hibs' epic efforts but, perhaps, none were as telling as their manager and his tigerish demeanour that was akin to a prize fighter ahead of a world title fight.

And his leadership and tactics allowed Boyle and Co to land the haymakers to secure a Hampden return for the Final against Celtic next month.
