The Rangers European 'kudos' on the rise as Gary McAllister targets another Europa League run

Gary McAllister insists clubs across Europe are beginning to take notice of Rangers after their impressive European performances over the last two seasons.

The Ibrox assistant manager has loved being back in Glasgow for the last two years and is hoping they can go on another exciting Europa League adventure.

While domestic form has slipped away post-Christmas in the last two campaigns, the European runs have been a mark of the development of the Rangers squad under Steven Gerrard.

After being knocked out by Progres Niederkorn under previous boss Pedro Caixinha in 2017, Gerrard has taken Rangers to the group stage in his first season and then the last 16 in 2019/20.

Teams on the receiving ends of defeats to Rangers include the likes of Porto, Feyenoord, Legia Warsaw and Rapid Vienna and McAllister reckons that it's helped get the club's reputation back on track.

He told RangersTV: "What we’re looking for is a journey that we’ve been on for the last couple of seasons, It’s been really exciting and this is the start of hopefully another run into the latter stages of the Europa League.

"Over the piece, visually watching the players gain such good experiences. There’s been so many good games, going back to Villarreal, Legia Warsaw.

"I’ve been fortunate enough to play in some great stadiums and some of the teams we’ve managed to get results against has been fantastic. TO see the players grow and get some great results against high profile clubs has been very exciting

"Hopefully his is the start of something great again.

"I would say when we first arrived here we wanted to get things flying domestically. It’s been said that it's a disadvantage to play a level of opponent up and then come back and play a level domestically but I think it’s worked for our squad of players.

"The fact that we held our own against Porto, Feyenoord, Villarreal, Warsaw, Rapid Vienna, beating Maribor, beating Braga.

"For me, I think our kudos is rising across Europe again. People are saying ‘Oh, Rangers are on an upward curve with that project there’."
