The Rangers Europa League scenario that could lead to Bayer Leverkusen advantage

UEFA have proposed two scenarios to finish off European club competitions - including Rangers' Europa League campaign.

As revealed by Record Sport on Tuesday, the European football governing body are considering the completion of domestic seasons before an August 'festival of football' where the Europa League and Champions League campaigns will be concluded.

But another possibility being raised by UEFA is running both the domestic season and the European competitions in parallel - which has raised questions on unfair advantages between different countries.

A statement read: "The UEFA Executive Committee met today via videoconference.

"It received updates on the Working Groups established in partnership with the European Club Association (ECA), European Leagues (EL) and FIFPRO Europe.

"Of the two scenarios being examined by the Calendar Working Group, both envisage domestic football starting before UEFA club competitions, with one seeking to run the competitions in parallel and the other to complete domestic matches before re-starting UEFA matches in August."

As expected, both scenarios leave the door open for Rangers ' last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen to be completed.

Steven Gerrard's side trail the Germans 3-1 ahead of a return leg in the Rhineland.

But the first option leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

Seasons including the Scottish Premiership could be declared over in UEFA member countries, leaving potentially months of teams going without fixtures before being thrust into a highly competitive European tie.

Rangers' German opponents on the other hand will benefit from keeping up their match fitness in a planned closed-door conclusion to the Bundesliga season, for which Bayer are already back in socially-distanced training.

There is also the issue of player contracts, which were uniformly extended by FIFA until the end of the domestic season in the country a player is in. If a domestic season is ended before UEFA competitions restart, it is unclear if players will be able to stay for European ties left over from the previous season.
