The Rangers and Celtic show of respect that is dividing fan opinion

A sign of the times? A sign of a dead rubber derby? Or much ado about nothing?

Smiling faces, at least between opponents, remain taboo in the heat of a Celtic and Rangers clash.

Opponents joking and hugging in the heat of battle is supposed to be confined to the so-called artificial derbies of the English Premier League.

So when former Southampton team-mates Mohamed Elyounoussi and Steven Davis shared a jovial moment at Ibrox on Sunday, it was certain to divide opinion.

Moreso for the Celtic man, given his side were already 3-1 down on the way to a drubbing from their old foes.

The Parkhead faithful have largely fallen out of love with this current crop and while the Norwegian, on-loan from Southampton, has been among the better performers his show of respect with Davis became a point of contention.

The pair played together at Saints, it must be remembered, and they enjoyed a brief laugh after coming together in the final derby of the campaign.

But for some it was a betrayal of the 'us and them' mentality, while others really weren't fussed at all.

@helenmcguire : "Get that in the bin."

@PaddyMcG1967: "All of a sudden I don’t want Celtic to sign Elyounoussi"

@BadgerCFC: "Things you hate to see"

@OisinMul_: "No time for that nonsense in this fixture"

@WEWYRB: "If anyone getting upset at this. They were teammates at Southampton.. It’s really not that big of a deal"

@fumefox: "Love that"

@CCauleyy: "Absolutely not, terrible behaviour"

@kennybrown446: "This is brilliant"

@pukkibhoy: "'Fiercest rivalry in world football' what a laugh… this is what the Old Firm has become?"
