The Rain by Virginia Bergin - review

therain.jpg

Ruby Morris is just your average sixteen year-old girl. She loves parties, make-up and boys – especially Caspar McCloud. It's one night when Ruby, Caspar and her friends are at a party that everything starts changing. It starts with the rain. There's something in it that kills you if you get just one drop on your skin and millions of people are dying per day because of it. But not Ruby. Somehow she manages to survive, and starts on her way to London, trying to find her Dad – which is how she ends up stuck in a car with the school's most annoying boy ever…

I personally didn't enjoy this book at all. I didn't think that the story flowed and I found most of it pretty confusing. I was excited to read the book, and after reading the blurb I thought the rain that could kill you' idea was a really great concept. However, it never really explained why the rain was deadly in the first place, which was a question I felt needed answering. I didn't really connect with the characters or understand their feelings. I think that if I were to read it again I would understand the story a bit more, especially the ending, which I couldn't follow at all. The answers to some of my questions may be in the sequel - The Storm - but after reading The Rain, I'm not particularly motivated to discover the them.

This book might be worth trying if you are into science fiction, but alas, this book wasn't for me.
