The Rafa Benitez signing which goes down as one of the worst Newcastle deals of the last 20 years

Yoshinori Muto's time on Tyneside was far from memorable and few tears were shed when his exit was confirmed earlier this summer - released on a free transfer.

The Japanese international has moved back to his homeland and Vissel Kobe - and after just 25 appearances for the Magpies over the last three years, it's hard to pick out a high point of his Toon career.

The goal against Manchester United may be the only thing of note - and perhaps not difficult given Muto only scored just one Premier League goal during his time at Newcastle.

Speaking on the Everything is Black and White Podcast, The Mirror's Simon Bird spoke about the striker and his failed top-flight career.

"The price that was quoted [when he signed] was £9m - it might not have been Rafa's first choice but he was there at the time and sanctioned it.

"Right from the off, Muto didn't look like he had the physicality, the pace or the guile - he didn't look great.

"It goes down as a pretty bad deal.

"We haven't really discussed Muto a great deal in the past because no one has seen much of him and that goes down as one of the poorest signings at Newcastle over the last 10 or 20 years."
