The radical SPFL schedule change that could transform the game as FIFA chief floats radical 'solution'

FIFA's vice-president has proposed a radical change to the football calendar that could see matches played by calendar year.

Football has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with leagues across the world shut down.

In Europe most domestic top flights are yet to finish, with seasons running across two years.

While UEFA are keen for leagues to be completed, there is a growing realisation that more countries may have to follow the lead of France and the Netherlands by ending seasons early.

That decision could come for the Scottish Premiership, with an SPFL resolution providing the power to end the top flight based on points per game.

That would see Celtic crowned champions, but even if the season is ended it's not clear when next term will start.

There are fears that there could be no football until September, making it difficult to fit in the 2020-21 season in time for the European Championships in the summer.

Now though FIFA's vice-president has suggested that the issue could be overcome by switching to a calendar year format.

Victor Montagliani, who is also president of CONCACAF said on Radio Sportiva: "We had already begun to think about how to set a new calendar by 2024, now with this crisis we need immediate answers.

"There is the possibility of thinking about how to reform football, not only in Europe but all over the world, to improve things in terms of schedules. It's a conversation to be had, above all with the federations and confederations.

"We have an opportunity because the 2022 World Cup will be played in Qatar in November and December, so that could be an idea.

"Here in the Americas we already play based on the calendar year, maybe that's a solution that could also work in Europe and Africa.

"It's a possibility to be discussed at national and continental level, but it's certainly not an idea to be dismissed.

"It could be a solution for the next two years with this winter World Cup."
