The radical Cup plan Newcastle could be facing when next season eventually starts

Newcastle United may have to be content with participating in just one cup competition next season as a consequence of plans to ensure this campaign is played out.

The Magpies sat in on an emergency meeting Premier League clubs this week as ideas were thrashed out between chairmen on what the best approach will be moving forward due to the virus pandemic.

One suggestion from the meeting is said to be easing fixtures next season by removing either the League Cup or FA Cup from the fixture list - according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

Such a move would be a major blow for Geordie fans who feel that the two competitions are the only chance of success on Tyneside.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said recently: “The League Cup is off in France already. Only England remains.

"I think that everybody knows that it would be better for everyone if that were not played any more.

“But the problem is that, through that cup, you finance a lot of clubs that are quite disadvantaged, so I understand the problem.

"The English are also quite traditionalist, you like things that have been there for ages.”

The hope for Premier League clubs is that football resumes in May with a June finish, and that the 2020/21 season gets under way with a reduced programme due to the absence of one of the competitions.
