"The race to the top of Moel Famau": readers share their hilarious memories of school trips to Colomendy

North Wales holiday camp Colomendy has played a huge role in the childhood of many Scousers.

For more than 70 years, trips to Colomendy have been a rite of passage for kids across Merseyside, with hundreds making their way to the camp each year on school trips.

For many, memories of competing against other schools staying at the camp and being told about the chippy at the top of Moel Famau come rushing back as soon as the word is mentioned.

This month, the Royal Court has a new comedy about the school trip favourite, and ECHO readers have been sharing their hilarious memories of staying at Colomendy on Facebook.

Stephen Cannon wrote: “I remember: - the race to the top of Moel Famau & Moel Fendi; - the red skeleton light they left on in the dorm rooms all night; - the day out to Mold to get 'souvenirs' for your Mum & Dad.”

While Linda Dennigan said her favourite memories included teachers checking on the kids using a torch, the crying kid who got sent home and eating bananas in cold custard.

Cathy Farrington’s memories included: “Going to the farm and [being] given warm milk straight from the cow, being terrified I’d get stuck in that small underground passageway on the way to the underground lake but having the best time ever.”

David Taylor said one of his best memories is “hover-boarding down the wooden stairs on a wooden tray in the GlenAllen chalets”, while Jackie Walker remembers someone pulling tadpoles in her wellies during her trip to the North Wales holiday camp.

Samatha Price said: “I slid down the little waterfall in devil’s gorge and got a dead leg on a rock and lost my welly. The guide has to dive in and get it. Good times.”

Sue Wynne also enjoyed her time at the camp, and wrote: “Loved my time there..scared witless in case peg leg appeared in the middle of the night but remember coming back from climbing moel famau and being given flapjacks and hot chocolate.”

Lyn Ney confessed to causing some trouble when she visited as a teenager and said: “In secondary school we got caught drinking martini out of a coke bottle in the toilets! One of the lads looked older and bought it when we went to ruthin! Good times!"
