The Rabbits
The Rabbits Photograph: Jon Green

Author John Marsden and artist Shaun Tan’s 1998 picture book, The Rabbits, tells a story of colonisation, civilisation and progress. In the book, an unseen narrator is curious when rabbits arrive on his soil, but it soon becomes apparent that the visitors are actually invaders.

Opera Australia and Barking Gecko Theatre Company assembled some of Australia’s foremost creative talents to create an opera version of the tale. With designs by Gabriela Tylesova, an enchanting libretto by playwright Lally Katz, and a score by musician Kate Miller-Heidke, the book has been adapted and directed on stage by John Sheedy. It retells the story of hope and adaptation – for young and for old.
