The quirky reason John Kennedy is Celtic next manager favourite with the bookies

The news that John Kennedy has emerged as the odds-on favourite to replace Neil Lennon will have surprised some fans.

Maybe it shouldn't have, though, as it can be explained by bookmakers’ rule.

Effectively it means the bookies would consider the temporary appointment permanent before the end of the campaign.

This call would occur if Kennedy oversaw 10 Celtic games before Dermot Desmond and Dominic McKay name a permanent successor.

As it stands, there are eight Premiership fixtures to be played by the Hoops before the disastrous league campaign is over.

However, the 37-year-old could still be the man in the hot seat for the remaining Scottish Cup fixtures.

As it stands Celtic are set to play either Falkirk or Arbroath in the third round, but all games are on hold alongside League One and League Two.

Kennedy has worked under Ronny Deila, Brendan Rodgers and Lennon, and has been priced at 4-6.

Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Steve Clarke are also among the early frontrunners for the Parkhead post.

Coral’s John Hill said: “John Kennedy has the chance to try and earn the Celtic job on a full time basis and we make him the odds-on favourite to do that.

“There are some big names behind Kennedy in the betting for this job, including Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Rafael Benitez."

Full list of runners and riders: 4-6 John Kennedy, 4-1 Eddie Howe, 6-1 Steve Clarke, 7-1 Frank Lampard, 8-1 Rafael Benitez, 12-1 Roy Keane, 20-1 Thierry Henry, 25-1 David Wagner, 25-1 Henrik Larsson
