The Queen wants a new gardener at Buckingham Palace - but the pay is £18,000

Budding gardeners are being offered the chance to work for the Queen – on a weedy salary.

The full-time job comes with bed and board at Buckingham Palace.

But whoever lands it won’t exactly be raking in the cash along with the autumn leaves, as it pays just £18,100 a year for a five-day week.

The successful applicant will be expected to cut grass, tend shrubs and prune roses – as well as get up with the lark ready for a 7.30am start.

The salary works out at just over £9 an hour for an average week of 37.5 hours. And it is still an improvement on the £16,500 offered when the same job was advertised in 2016 and the £14,950 tag it carried in 2014.

The advert to join the Royal Family’s Gardens and Grounds team says the position is for someone who will help “provide a spectacular setting for a magnificent historic building, as well for high profile events”.

The team maintains all Royal gardens and the surrounding areas of Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace to an exceptionally high standard.

The ad outlining the chance to work for Her Majesty says whoever is finally selected will be “joining a team at the heart of a world famous institution”.

It lists duties including mowing, re-seeding and top-dressing lawns, plus maintaining flower borders.

And it reminds applicants of their hefty responsibility by saying: “The gardens and grounds team care for and present gardens that are seen by thousands of visitors and guests every year.”

A Royal source said: “This is the opportunity of a lifetime for a gardener looking to branch out.”
