The Queen has delivered a message to the listeners of BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour in honour of the programme’s 75th anniversary.
On Monday 4 January, which marks the first day that broadcaster Emma Barnett joined as the new Woman’s Hour host, Barnett explained that, after being approached by the BBC, HRH had sent a message to listeners of the show.
“As you celebrate your 75th year, it is with great pleasure that I send my best wishes to the listeners and all those associated with Woman’s Hour,” said Barnett, reading the Queen’s message.
"During this time, you have witnessed and played a significant part in the evolving role of women across society both here and around the world.
“In this notable anniversary year, I wish you continued success in your important work as a friend, guide and advocate for women everywhere.”
Barnett noted how the letter was signed “Elizabeth R” on Windsor Castle headed note paper.
It comes as broadcaster Barnett takes over from previous Woman’s Hour hosts, Jane Garvey and Dame Jenni Murray, who both left the show last year.
Ahead of taking on the role, Barnett said: "I can't wait to get to know the many listeners of Woman's Hour a lot, lot better. What adventures we are going to have together - all starting in the year that this BBC institution, the radio mothership, turns 75.
"I have a long love of Woman's Hour and live radio, and know that this is a very special and rare opportunity."
On Sunday, Barnett revealed some of her preparation rituals for her first day on the job.
“New note pad, chewed pen, clean bra, snacks prepped, speak to you tomorrow and look forward to sharing the mic with you over @BBCRadio4...10am,” she tweeted.
“And if you’ve never tried it before - go on. Go on join me...I’ll get the kettle on...”
