This book is about 10 years old, Harmony Parker, who has always wanted an animal of her own. Harmony thought of every person as an animal: Her mother a tubby pouter pigeon; her father would be a sea lion and her sister a Siamese cat. Harmony isn't allowed a pet because of her family's dislike towards them; they think animals are a disgrace. But when Uncle Ginger arrives from India with mysterious and magical 50 pence piece everything changes for Harmony, for the better.
But when Harmony discovers devastating news, she realises family is more important than anything else in world, even animals. A down-to-earth and funny story of what a girl does to meet her desires. This story will delight readers of all ages.
This book is another one of Dick King-Smith's classics. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I loved the relationship between Harmony & animals. I also loved the way it's written, and the illustrations. I would definitely pick up this book again. This book is a fun, light humoured read for children, one of those pick me ups if you like.
I would recommend this book to readers of all ages because it is a short and snappy read. But particularly young readers (8-12 years) as it appeals to this age group; readers who like books in the genre of animals, fantasy and magic.
