The Queen's 'cryptic' pregnancy announcement didn't even mention she was expecting

Pregnancy announcements have evolved over the years and, somewhere along the way, have become pretty "extra".

Perhaps a dazzling and brilliant example of this is Beyoncé's Instagram post heralding the news of her pregnancy with twins Rumi and Sir Carter.

Even the royals have got in on the act with their announcements via social media, albeit a little more matter-of-fact than Queen Bey.

When the Duchess of Cambridge was pregnant with Prince George, St James' Palace issued a statement which began: "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news."

Of course, having suffered with Hyperemesis Gravidarum with each of her pregnancies, announcements were made while Kate was still in her first trimester.

Even before Kate, Diana and Sarah Ferguson made public statements. Diana would discuss the news with the press, which "set a new mark for informality,"  People  reported then. The magazine even called the couple's announcement "chatty."

As for the Queen, though, she did things very differently.

Back in 1948, the monarch (then just plain old Princess Elizabeth) made her pregnancy with Charles public knowledge with a vague statement that was described as "cryptic" by People magazine.

In fact, to the untrained eye, it doesn't read like a pregnancy announcement at all.

"Her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth will undertake no public engagements after the end of June," the statement said, according to  The New York Times .

She gave birth to Charles in November of the same year, so withdrew from the public eye just under five months before his birth.

Of course, back in 1948, the world was a very different place and attitudes towards pregnancy were much more conservative.

Grace Kelly famously shielded her growing bump from the paparazzi with a Hermes bag, which is just about the most royal thing we've ever heard.
