The Queen has praised the news industry for providing an “important public service” during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Her Royal Highness, 94, said news reports have provided “a lifeline for the elderly and vulnerable to the outside world”.
The Queen, who spoke out at the start of Journalism Matters week, described media-led fundraising and volunteering drives as being “invaluable”.
She said: “Having trusted reliable sources of information, particularly at a time when there are so many sources competing for our attention, is vital.”
The campaign by the News Media Association on behalf of publishers celebrates journalism as a force for good in society.
Chairman Henry Faure Walker said: “We have held power to account and robustly challenged the decision-makers.”
The public are being asked to vote on their favourite media campaigns.
Those shortlisted include the Mirror’s “Change the Law for Life” organ donation campaign.
And the push for “Helen’s Law”, which will make it harder for killers who refuse to reveal the location of victims’ bodies to win parole.
Voting begins at 9.30am today until 5pm on Wednesday.
