The Queen postpones visit to Cheshire amid coronavirus outbreak

The Queen has postponed upcoming engagements amid the coronavirus outbreak, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The 93-year-old monarch was due to visit Cheshire next week and Camden the following week.

It comes after the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall pulled out of their overseas tour to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and Jordan.

A spokesman for the Queen said: "As a sensible precaution and for practical reasons in the current circumstances, changes are being made to The Queen’s diary commitments in the coming weeks.

"In consultation with the Medical Household and Government, Her Majesty’s forthcoming visits to Cheshire and Camden will be rescheduled.

"Audiences will continue as usual. Other events will be reviewed on an ongoing basis in line with the appropriate advice."

The Prince of Wales has also cancelled an upcoming royal tour overseas (PA)

The Queen was due to visit the Bentley Motors Factory in Crewe, and the Jodrell Bank Observatory and Square Kilometre Array Global Headquarters in Macclesfield on March 19.

Prince Charles and Camilla's spokesperson said earlier on Thursday that the decision to cancel their royal engagements was "owing to the unfolding situation with the coronavirus pandemic".

Clarence House said: "Owing to the unfolding situation with the Coronavirus pandemic, the British Government has asked Their Royal Highnesses to postpone their spring tour to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and Jordan."

On Friday it was announced that nearly 33,000 tests for Covid-19 have been carried out in the UK.

The total number of positive cases in the UK has risen to 798 and a total have 10 people have died after contracting the virus.
