The Queen Of Bright And Shiny Things by Ann Aguirre – review

Sage is quite odd. She shies away from the norms circulating around her school. Everyday she places a post it note on someone’s locker in order to cheer them up.

Rough around the edges but evidently attractive with his guitar and music, Shane has his fair share of problems. He wasn’t looking to find love when he moved school; but he found the perfect girl – or so it seemed. Sage was the only person who opened her door to him but behind her door is a mess she cannot clean, but has to live with.

Though desperate for her secret to stay hidden, it was inevitable that it would be revealed whilst playing with the devil – Dylan. However, Sage had a mattress to fall back on - Ryan, her best friend who just so happens to be in love with her and Lila, her newly found friend. With everything exposed Sage can be her true self.

The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things is a brilliant young adult contemporary and a non-cliched teen romance. The ‘Post it Princess’ is my idea of someone I’d aspire to be more like – going beyond what is socially accepted to make others happy. Both Sage and Shane have had a difficult past and through out the book, their lives weren’t exactly portrayed as a bed of roses.

Sympathy is key in this book and though our experience in comparison to each character may differ a lot, its strangely easily relatable. I really enjoyed this book because I got my wish of a happy ending.
