The Queen has never taken a driving test and drives without a licence - here's why

The Queen enjoys many perks as Monarch - big homes and lots of cash to name just two.

However, perhaps a lesser known benefit is that Her Majesty is the only person in the country who is allowed to drive without a licence.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron has previously praised The Queen and her driving ability, which is free from legal reproach.

Unlike every other driver in the UK, the royal is not required to drive with a number plate, Mirror Online reports.

The Queen's motoring skills were even the subject of a story earlier this year after it was revealed she gave Saudi Arabia's then king Abdullah a fright back in 2003.

The king has jumped in the passenger seat while visiting Balmoral.

Shepard Cowper-Coles, a former British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, said: “Abdullah was not used to being driven by a woman, let alone a queen.

In his book 'Ever the Diplomat: Confessions of a Foreign Office Mandarin', Cowper-Coles continued: "His nervousness only increased as the Queen, an Army driver in wartime, accelerated the Land Rover along the narrow Scottish estate roads.”

The Middle Eastern royal even asked the Queen, through his translator, to “slow down and concentrate on the road ahead.”
