The Queen gives witty response after tourists don't recognise her walking at Balmoral

Despite being one of the most famous faces in the world, and having her face printed on quite a few bank notes, it appears not everyone knows what the Queen looks like.

According to her former protection officer, one unsuspecting group of tourists even asked her Majesty if she had "ever met the Queen" while out walking on Balmoral Estate.

Unbeknown to the group, ex-officer Richard explained that they were actually conversing with Elizabeth II herself, as she walked her dogs on the grounds.

In a quick-witted response, he shared that her Majesty had replied: "No, but this policeman has," gesturing towards him.

After failing to question her answer the group moved on, completely unaware that they had been standing right in front of the Queen herself, reports the Mirror.

This year, the Queen's stay at Balmoral will mark the first summer holiday she has taken there without her beloved husband Prince Philip, who died in April.

It was a special place to the couple and is where she and Prince Philip spent part of their honeymoon in 1947.

However, she is unlikely to be alone for very long as members of her family are invited to spend time with her at Balmoral every summer.

A picture released following Philip's death showed the Queen and her late husband surrounded by their great grandchildren at their Scottish home.

But despite it being a holiday, the monarch still gets to work overseeing Government papers.

These are sent up to her by private secretaries in the red boxes also used by Government ministers to carry important and confidential documents.
