The Queen gives all her staff this traditional gift - which you can pick up for £6 in Tesco

Royal staff are treated to a special festive gift from the Queen every year.

All 1,500 members of Her Majesty's staff at Buckingham Palace will get the same present, a Christmas pudding, The Mirror reports .

The tradition is said to originate with the Queen's grandfather, George V, and in the past Palace staff have received luxury puddings from brands including Harrods or Fortnum & Mason.

This year HRH is cutting costs, it seems, as Hello magazine claims the traditional desserts will this year come from Tesco.

Staff are expected to each receive a Tesco's Finest Matured Christmas Pudding, which you can pick up for £6.

They will also be given a card from the Queen and Prince Philip themselves.

And those who've been working at the palace a while, will also earn shopping vouchers, which range in value up to £35.

The gifts are funded personally by the Queen.

On Friday, the monarch arrived in Norfolk for her annual Christmas break, which she spends at her estate at Sandringham.

On Saturday, Prince William and wife Kate were pictured arriving at Buckingham Palace ahead of the Queen's annual Christmas lunch.

The traditional feast is held annually to give the monarch an opportunity to spend time with her family before the holidays begin, particularly those who do not join her in Norfolk on December 25.
