The Queen enjoys a martini at Christmas while Philip puts star on tree doc reveals

With Christmas on the way the Queen is getting ready for her festive retreat at Sandringham.

But before she heads to Norfolk, she has a duty to approve all royal decorations across all royal residences.

In Channel 5's documentary, 'Inside Sandringham: Holidaying with the Queen', it's revealed how the 93-year-old oversee the festive preparations.

Royal commentator Dickie Arbiter said the Christmas trees look no different than any other.

He said: "It is decorated in much the same way as people throughout the United Kingdom decorate their tree.

"You've got the baubles, the tinsel, the coloured lights."

The tree at the Sandringham estate will put on the decorations, of which Prince Philip to put a gold star at the top of the tree.

Royal insider Claudia Joseph said: "He's quite a stalwart and won't let other people take control.

"When any young children comes they put their own decorations on."

The Duke is said to be signing every Christmas card sent by the Queen.

Dickie added: "The Queen signs every Christmas card she sends, as does Prince Philip.

"There's no stencilling or faxing or anything like that, and the card count runs into hundreds.

"All the staff get a card, then friends get a card.

"There are people you've got send cards to and people you want to send cards to, but every card is signed by both of them."

The documentary also mentioned the Queen makes a boozy toast to thank her staff members over Christmas.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady said: "At the end of carving the turkey, the palace steward brings the chef a glass of whiskey, and Her Majesty raises a toast to the head chef."

Royal expert Ingrid Seward pointed out the Queen's favourite drink.

She said: "I think the Queen likes a martini, other people would rather have champagne.

"Prince Philip isn't a great drinker, he always used to drink pale ale.

"So they're not great drinkers. But the drinks are very strong. So any one that's a guest would be knocked out by these drinks."
