The Queen’s wardrobe is a bounty of edible shades – from sugared almond pinks to flat white browns – and, at Ascot today, she has kept up the theme. This hat claims to be pistachio (apparently the Queen “stitched up” the bookies by wearing the hue) but the coat is true turquoise – the kind of colour you only get on sweets that turn your tongue blue. It’s fizzy, and zesty and clashes delightfully with both the classic brown handbag around her arm and the colour of the grass she’s walking on. Talking of which, a word on her ankles, so round and so familiar in those loafers and skin-coloured stocking that like the man ankle – AKA the mankle – they deserve their own name. All hail the quankle, a one-woman fashion triumph.
