'The public are alarmed': Manchester council leaders to contact Sadiq Khan for advice on eradicating knife crime after seven stabbings in eight days

Manchester should turn to London for answers on how to tackle knife crime, a senior politician has said.

Pat Karney says he will contact London Mayor Sadiq Khan to ask how officials in Greater Manchester can work to eradicate knife crime from the city region.

The Harpurhey councillor was speaking after two teenagers were injured during a knife attack at a McDonalds restaurant in the suburb.

A teenage suffered a laceration to the hand, and another suffered a "minor arm injury" during the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

Both were taken to hospital, however police say their injuries are not serious.

A teenage boy is in custody after being arrested on suspicion of of section 18 assault.

There was a large police presence at the restaurant - which is close to the Manchester College - as officers dealt with the incident last night.

Crime scene investigators spent around two hours scouring the area for evidence while officers spoke to witnesses.

It is the seventh stabbing in Manchester in the space of eight days.

In just over a week police have reported to incidents of knife crime in in Fallowfield, Rusholme,  Levenshulme and Abaraham Moss, two incidents in Longsight and today’s incident in Harpurhey.

Greater Manchester Police say the incidents are not linked and “significant progress” has been made in at least five of the cases.

Patrols have been ramped up across the city to offer reassurance to the community.

“Thanks to GMP for speedy response and arrest. Those injured have been seen to.

He later told the M.E.N that serious action was needed to curb knife crime in the city.

“The public are getting highly alarmed and fed up reading about young people with knives,” he said.

“I will talk to the Mayor, GMP and the council to talk about how we can tackle this.”

Mr Karney said Greater Manchester could look to London for solutions as to how to tackle knife crime.

He said: "The person who knows most about this is Sadaiq Khan, the mayor of London, and he's done the most work on this.

"I will check out if there is anything we can learn from London where knife fights have led to murder.

"You're only inches away from killing someone if you carry a knife. Whole lives can be altered in one moment of madness.

“Let's put the work in now to get knives off the streets of Manchester."
