The Proclaimers' Craig Reid talks love-hate relationship with the Edinburgh festival

The Proclaimers' Craig Reid has told of his love-hate relationship with the Edinburgh festivals.

In an interview with a New Zealand newspaper, he also spoke of Leith's "gentrification."

The Sunshine of Leith duo recently backed the Save Leith Walk campaign, which opposed a student flat and hotel development on the street.

Charlie and Craig Reid are rarely home in Edinburgh these days, but they enjoy the festival overall.

Craig told the NZ Herald: "On balance I think the festival is a good thing.

11 surefire ways to seriously annoy someone from Edinburgh - every single time

"It's still a fairly small city, and the numbers that come at the height of the festival almost swamp the place.

"It's about as big now as it can get now. Though we've been saying that for 20 years."

Talking about Leith, he said that its increasingly trendy location is pushing up prices for locals.

He said: "You wouldn't have to be a local to understand where the gentrification is happening.

"It's a small area. To get a good idea, head down Leith Walk, go into the pub, go into the cafes. People are always ready to talk. And that's great about places like Leith."

11 reasons Leith is definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, the best part of Edinburgh

He added: "You can't stand in the way of progress.

"But when you get a massive rise in the popularity of a place — it's not particular to Leith — people who were born there can't afford to move back."
