The problems Everton could face in offloading Theo Walcott as winger's Blues future 'in doubt'

Theo Walcott's time at Everton could soon be coming to an end, according to some reports.

The winger made the move to Goodison Park in January 2018 and quickly established himself as an important player for the club, but his influenced has significantly waned over the last few months.

Now many reports believe that Marco Silva and Marcel Brands could be looking to offload the 30-year-old in the coming summer as the Blues look to further reduce the average age of their squad.

However, selling the high-profile winger won't be as cut-and-dry as you might think - and there are a number of issues Everton could potentially face in the process.

How much Everton paid in agents' fees across 2018/19 revealed

The price

There's no getting around the fact that Everton paid big money to bring Walcott to Merseyside in the first place.

In January 2018 the Blues were desperately lacking pace all over the pitch, but especially in the final third.

Then-manager Sam Allardyce turned to Arsenal to sign Walcott, who wasn't getting the opportunities that he was craving at the Emirates.

However, he was still an important asset to the Gunners, and the north London side were always going to charge a large price for anyone trying to pry their player away.

It was reported Everton paid more than £20m to bring the winger to Goodison Park - and the club will want to recoup as much of that as possible.

However, finding a buyer willing to shell out that much money for the 30-year-old might prove to be a tricky task.

The Premier League rule change that could save Everton millions in the transfer market

Wages

You can't talk about finances without mentioning wages.

It was a big task for both Silva and Brands to try and reduce Everton's wage bill as much as possible over the summer of 2018, and it was achieved.

However, there's still a fair way to go, and there are players on big money with the Blues that will be hard to shift.

One of those is Walcott - with wages in excess of £100,000-a-week.

Any club interested in buying the winger will have to get close to matching those wages, which is no small feat.

New figures which show Everton's incredible season ticket success is growing

Form

This, of course, will always play a part.

Walcott certainly was a massively useful asset to Everton when he was first brought to the club, and popped up with some important goals in the second half of the 2017/18 term.

The feeling was that the 30-year-old would then be able to use that as a platform to kick on and make himself a crucial player for the club, but that hasn't happened.

The one thing Marco Silva needs to improve after Everton's best performance of the season

Casting your mind back to the start of the campaign and there was actually a lot of promise that Walcott could deliver - bagging two goals in two games against Southampton and Bournemouth in August.

However, since then, it's been a struggle for the forward to perform at a consistent level.

Across 34 appearances in all competitions during 2018/19, Walcott has only managed to bag four goals and two assists.

The last few weeks have seen the winger drop out of the Blues line-up, with Richarlison and Bernard looking strong on both flanks as they look to solidify their positions before the end of the campaign.

Will other sides have seen enough from Walcott to be able to commit big money to his signing? That is yet to be seen.
