The prime Swansea city centre street that's now almost entirely covered in scaffolding

This is the unattractive sight that now greets shoppers as they arrive at a Swansea shopping street.

Even more scaffolding has been erected along Princess Way, which was already dominated by it in the first place.

The entrance to the Miss Selfridge store was barely visible previously, but now even more scaffolding has been erected around the full height of the building, along with pink and blue coloured debris netting.

Initially a smaller section of scaffolding was placed there when bits of rubble fell off the sign above the shop windows. It was further extended towards the end of last week.

The timescale of the works are unclear, but it means the building now looks similar to the giant structure on the opposite side of the street, which has partially hidden businesses since November, 2018.

The scaffolding went up after it had been discovered that hundreds of large concrete tiles which clad the building were in danger of falling onto shoppers.

Businesses such as Coffee #1, Slater menswear, Zara, and Tiger were forced to display "open as usual" signs on the metal scaffolding and sheeting to try to remind people they were there.

It had been hoped that it would be taken down by  November last year , before the Christmas shopping season got fully into gear, and some of the lower structure was removed, but the bulk of the scaffolding remains.

Vail Williams LLP, which is carrying out works on that side of the road, told us in September last year that "a tender for completion of these works is now imminent" and once appointed, the contractor would produce a timeline for the necessary repairs. But the situation currently remains unchanged.

Miss Selfridge has also displayed a 'trading as usual' banner outside the scaffolding, but its signage is no longer visible.

A spokesman from Quantum Swansea LLP, which owns the side of the building which houses the likes of Coffee #1, said: “We are continuing the tendering process and have appointed a structural surveyor to provide a detailed report for the necessary repairs to be completed by the appointed contractor. Having engaged with all tenants and the local authority, it is our absolute priority to return the site to its original glory. But to ensure the continued safety of the public, the scaffolding will remain in place.”

Miss Selfridge has been contacted for comment.
