The 'prime suspect' after seagull snatches chihuahua from garden

This is the 'prime suspect' after a chihuahua was snatched from a garden by a seagull.

The bird has been pictured at the scene on the same street pooch Gizmo was taken on Sunday afternoon.

Owner Becca Hill confirmed the disappearance of the four-year-old pooch her partner saw a bird swoop down and take him from their back garden in Paignton, Devon.

Searches are being carried out to find the dog.

Neighbours say birds have become more and more brazen in recent weeks and have started snatching rabbits.

One person said: "It is impossible to know if this particular gull was responsible, but the way he was lurking must surely make him the prime suspect.

"The whole community has heard about what happened. There have been posters up and it is quite shocking when you think about it.

"We have heard reports that rabbits have also been snatched from the ground. I guess it was only time until they progressed - but it must be very distressing for Becca and her family.

"It is hard to believe a dog can be taken in this way though."

Becca hopes the power of social media and the nation's press will help her reunite with her pet.

Speaking yesterday, the 24-year-old said: "My partner was in the garden putting the washing out at the time and suddenly he saw it swoop down.

"It carried Gizmo a fair way as we couldn't see him anymore. I have no idea if he was dropped or where he is now."

Becca, who owns two others dogs, said her six-year-old daughter has been left distraught.

She wrote on Facebook: "Please, please, please, anyone finds a chihuahua he's mine a seagull has took him from my garden."

A Royal Society for the Protection of Birds spokesman said: "This must be extremely upsetting for the dog's owner.

"Fortunately these types of incidents are very rare and not typical gull behaviour."
