The primary school application deadline where you live - and what parents need to do
Parents across the North East are being urged to apply for primary school places for their children before the upcoming closing date.
The deadline for applications for most councils in the region is this weekend.
And if you don’t apply before the closing date, you might not get a place at your preferred school.
If your child was born between September 1, 2017, and August 31, 2018, they will start in Reception class at primary or first school in September 2022.
Parents who have a child due to start Reception this year are being asked to apply as soon as possible.
Here, we have rounded up information from each local authority in the North East and provided links where you can make an application.
The closing date for applications is Friday, January 14.
Parents can apply using this online portal. There are also frequently asked questions about school admissions.
For example, what happens if you do not apply?
North Tyneside Council says: "You will not be allocated a place on offer day for your child and you risk not gaining a place at any of the schools you would prefer your child to go to or their catchment school if you decide at a later date to apply. You must make an application."
And, will you automatically be offered a place if your child attends the nursery at a school?
The authority says: "No. Attendance at a nursery class does not guarantee a place at the Reception class of a school. You must make an application for a place in Reception class even if your child is currently attending the school’s nursery class. Where the school receives more applications than places available the published oversubscription criteria will be applied."
The closing date for parents to make an application is Saturday, January 15, 2022. More information and application details are here.
A spokesperson for Newcastle City Council said: "We encourage parents and carers to ensure they use all four preferences on their application, listed in order with their preferred school at the top, as this ensures a greater chance of being offered a place a school of their choice.
"We also advise parents and carers to check the oversubscription criteria for the schools they are applying for.
"Further information and guidance is available on our website."
The deadline for all first and primary school applications is Saturday, January 15, 2022.
Applications for September 2022 primary, junior and infant school places can be made here. A booklet with information for parents is also available on the website.
The deadline is 4.30pm on Monday, January 17, 2022.
Any applications received after this date will be considered as 'late'. The online application system is not available after the deadline date.
Gateshead Council says the following:
- We recommend you apply to three schools. Applying for only one school does not improve your chance of being offered a place at the school
- Your child's attendance at a nursery does not guarantee or improve your chances of being offered a place at your chosen school
- We cannot guarantee your child a place at any school you apply to, even if you live in the catchment area or have a sibling already at the school, as this will depend upon the number of applications the school receives
Applications must be made by Saturday, January 15, 2022.
Sunderland City Council says on its website: "If your application is received after 15 January 2022, it will reduce your chance of being offered your preferred school."
The authority encourages parents to read the "admissions to primary school booklet" before completing their application.

The deadline for applying for a primary school place in County Durham is Saturday, January 15, 2022.
The council has an admissions guide here, which explains everything you need to know about getting a school place for your child for September.
A late application greatly reduces your chances of getting into your preferred school, the authority says.
